Dear Reader Letter

Hello, my name is Kristin Albea! I am currently a student at Everett Community College, I am going to school to get my A.A. degree so that I can go to x-ray tech school and become an ultrasound tech. I am very excited to be going back to school because I have been a stay at home mom for the past 6 years and now that my kids are in school full time, it is time for me to get a higher education. Though, the main reason why I am going back to school is because my husband will be retiring in 4 years and it will be up to me to support the family while he is changing careers.

I have a beautiful family, my husband is in the Navy and has been for the past 16 years and as I said before, he is getting ready to retire. He is a Master-At-Arms, which is a military police officer, and he loves his job and is very good at it. He wants to stay in the law enforcement field when he gets out of the military. I also have two rambunctious boys, Tanner who is 10 years and Tyler who is 7 years old; they are my pride and joy.

Before I was a stay at home mom, I was a Registered Dental Assistant and I worked for an Orthodontist, but I quit to stay at home when my oldest son was diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome, which is a form of Autism. He is doing well now, so it is time for me to further my education.

I am currently in English 97 and what I like best about it is the reading assignments as well as the writing. I loved the book that we had to read, "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian" because the book was a really good read and was very difficult to put down. I also enjoyed the writing assignments. The journal writing was great; it is easy to write when the topic is chosen for you! The Major Writing Assignments were difficult but when they were complete I felt satisfied. My strengths in the class were doing the reading assignments and the homework and of course my attendence. My weaknesses in the class were taking the quizzes because I usually don't do well on them due to the fact that I go completely blank and freeze up.

The four pieces that I chose for my E-Portfolio are my 2 Major Writing Assignments and my 2 journal pieces. I chose my paper "My Bedroom Growing Up" because I did really well on it and because writing the paper brought back a lot of great memories. My next paper that I chose was "How to Put On a Set of Braces", I really enjoyed writing this piece because I like the technicality of the description. I also got a good grade on the paper so that was a plus! My 2 journal pieces that I chose are "Your First Time" and "Educated". I chose "Your First Time" because I really think it was my best descriptive writing that I have done, even though it is a bit short. "Educated" was also one of my best works and it was one of my favorite because it tells a story. I hope you have really enjoyed my writing and have lots of fun reading!

Introduction to "Educated"

I wrote this on April 5th of 2010. I chose this piece not only because I did well on it but because I enjoyed writing it. It was one of my first journals that I had to do, but it flowed well. It tells a lot about my sister and why she is a rolemodel to me, she is going back to school and doing well so I know that if she can do it then so can I. Happy reading!

"Educated"

What education means to me is basically a way for me to become independent again. I have spent 6 years at home with my kids and now it is time for me to go back to school and finish my education. I know it is going to be hard and I am not going to get all the answers right but I will do my best all the time and that is what counts. I need to go back to school mainly because my husband will be retiring from the Navy in 4 years and it will be my turn to support the family while he goes to school or makes a career change.

My rolemodel right now is my sister, she is going back to school for nursing and she will be done with her A.A. in January 2011. She is working full time as a deputy sherriff and taking a full course load of classes online. She says that it is tough but she has a goal and she does not want to be a cop forever. She wants to get into the medical field for security and and because the pay is better. Those reasons are the reasons why I want to become an x-ray technician.

Introduction to "Your First Time"

"Your first time" was written on May 6 2010, and it turned out to be more of a descriptive, show not tell journal. I thought that when I wrote "The flashing lights were so bright, and the sounds of the machines going crazy was simply spectacular" that I had a strong sense of showing. I grew a lot from writing the first set of journals and by the second go around, they were starting to get a bit harder. I really enjoy going to the casino now and I believe that it is because I had such a great first experience with it.

"Your First Time"

My first time at the casino was addicting. The flashing lights were so bright, and the sounds of the machines going crazy were simply spectacular. As I entered the warm, smoke filled room I worked my way to the penny slots, that was all that I was brave enough to play. My husband was with me and he was having fun just watching my face light up every time the machine that I was playing on made a noise that indicated that I had won something. We spent about 2 hours at the casino and it was time to go pick up the kiddos from the babysitters so we collected our winnings and left. Now, once a month we try to go back and spend an alloted amount of money at the casino and we make it a date and we have dinner. It is a lot of fun!

Introduction to "My bedroom Growing Up"

I wrote this piece on April 23, 2010 and it is considered a show not tell essay. A show not tell essay is basically a descriptive essay. I chose "My Bedroom Growing Up" because I knew that I would be able to walk you through my bedroom and it would bring back a lot of memories for me, as well as show you a piece of my childhood. This essay was my first essay that I had to write and I have to say that it was the most difficult for me. It is hard to put descriptive words into everything that you write, but I did the best that I could and I hope that you enjoy reading it!
